Running IB question banks on a mac

The IB website clearly states that the question banks would not work on mac computers unless ran on a windows emulator. You can go for installing a virtual machine that would run the entire windows operating system, but that is not the optimal method as it can slow down your mac.

The most common approach would be the use of softwares such as wine, and all the other applications based on it, but this may not be the most user-friendly method for an IB student. For mac users running on OS X mavericks, you need to download XQuark, which would allow the softwares to run.

Secondly, do not try to run the second version of the question bank or any earlier versions, because they are just complicated and not very compatible with these emulators. The third edition works best.

You can use winebottler to run the third edition of the question bank, but the most user friendly method would be the use of an app called crossover. Once the application is started, it allow you to either install the software, or run existing windows applications. Select the first option, and use it to open the question bank, which should be a .exe file. If done correctly, the question bank runs smoothly.

  1. Download XQuartz
  2. Download Crossover 13
  3. Get hold of the question bank software, which is designed for windows
  4. Find the installer .exe file.
  5. Right click it, and chose to open it with crossover
  6. Once opened, follow the instructions given in crossover. This should start the installation wizard.
  7. Once the installation is complete, wait for crossover to complete all its processes.
  8. Search for the file on your computer. You can keep it on your dock to allow for easy access.
